Healthy replacements for coffee

When we wake up in the morning we all have our morning habits: toilet, shower, breakfast, coffee. At least these are the classic ones.
My most important morning habit used to be: open eyes, walk to the kitchen and prepare my morning coffee. Only then I would go to the bathroom and do the rest of the morning routine.

I for one love the smell of coffee whether it’s morning or noon. Unfortunately it’s not healthy for everyone and after a while you get used to it and feel the need to drink one more, than another one and sooner or later you might end up drinking it like water.

I know a cup of coffee a day is good for health purposes but if we end up drinking 4 cups a day it’s bad. I started, for quite some time now, looking for coffee replacements since even if coffee is healthy in small dosages, I started to feel the need to drink more than one cup a day and that scares me.

I found that these coffee replacements are effective and some of them are even healthier:

Chicory

Chicory is a plant, obviously. It tastes almost like coffee and it has the same “waking up” effect. Chicory is good for intelectual activity, offers energy and contains magnesyum, calcium, vitamins and a lot more.
Chicory has other perks too. Among them we have: helping you lose weight (in time, don’t expect miracles after 1 cup), helps with calcium absorbtion and they say it reduces the risk of cancer.

Barley

Barley coffee is also a good replacement. It tastes just like coffee, even if it’s caffeine free. It contains amino acids that are essential to our health and it also costs less than regular coffee.
Barley tea is less popular but it can also be consumed instead of regular coffee. It’s caffeine free but it’s way more healthy than coffee.
If you get used to barley, here are some nice benefits: it regulates the level of sugar in your blood (assuming you don’t add 10 spoons of sugar in a cup), lowers the cholesterol, reduces stress (just a bit, it’s not a miracle worker), it helps with your digestion and it’s quit refreshing if you’d ask me.

Tea

Green tea and black tea are great coffee substitutes if you don’t need the smell of cofee in the morning. Black tea contains caffeine in less proportions than coffee and combined with all the vitamins it has and also amino acids, it’s a great substitute for coffee.
Green tea is also a good fit. It also contains caffeine but not as much as coffee does.
Both green and black tea are known for reducing high blood pressure, they have diuretic actions and reduce cholesterol levels. They also help blood circulate better and are invigorating.

These are my 3 replacements for coffee that I tried myself. I could go write about miracle products or plants but since I haven’t tried anything else, I trust these for the time being.

Do you use other coffee replacements that you recommend ?

  1. Great article, Adry, I’m going to have to give those a try. I used to be a really heavy coffee drinker, but made myself cut back big time because I realized I was drinking way too much. I ended up going the tea route, but I think I’m going to try out your other two suggestions. I had never thought of using either of them before. Thanks for the tip!

  2. I don’t drink coffee at all. It gives me insomnia, not to mention I can’t actually like its taste anyway. I don’t drink black/green tea since it’s also keeping me up at night. But I do like chicory a lot. And it doesn’t have anything like caffeine in it, so I can sleep nicely after drinking it.
