Xbox 720 & PS4 – What do you need to know?

Although these two consoles have not been properly announced yet, there has been a lot of information either made up or leaked about them. I wanted to post an article explaining what we know or think to let us get ready for these two consoles that should be hitting the shops very soon. There is some interesting things surfacing on the web about these two products so it will be interesting to see how they turn out and what the actual users reactions are. Please note that some of the things this article talks about may not be true. I have only read things from other places and decided to talk about them here, the facts may or may not be true. I must give my credit to Woodys Gamertag who did a couple of videos about these consoles which is how I got the majority of my information, thanks a lot for that. It really helped.

Xbox 720

For starters, the main reason we do not have much information about the Xbox 720 is down to the fact that Microsoft has been trying to keep it quiet, I am not sure why but they are keeping as much away from us a possible. The only big gaming company we know of currently that will be releasing a game for the Xbox 720 is Ubisoft who are working with two French government companies on this release. So, how do we know that there is a new console called the 720 coming out? Well, apart from the fact that we know of some small details, the rest is been kept quiet which tends to speak for more than them actually coming out and saying it would. There are nearly no big release games announced to come out on the Xbox 360 in 2013 which is kind of strange if I do say so myself. This makes me and others believe there is a new breed of Xbox coming out this year. It is very strange to not hear of games coming out in the Christmas season for 2013 because that is when they most commonly come out. The expected launch date for the Xbox 720 is around December 2013 which will also be around the time that other consoles like the Steam Box launch.

So as we all know, console technology gets out of date very quickly so there will be a big upgrade from the old technology, the reason why gaming consoles can hold there own is because it is easier to code for. Computers have different specs and therefore is a lot harder to code for but gaming consoles only has one set of specs and therefore is easier to code for because the coders know what they are coding for. This is why they are still popular to this date. The Xbox 720 will have 8GB’s of RAM. Xbox will be putting in a better graphics card than previously but will not be as good as the PS4.

There are some interesting developments on this console though. It is rumored that unlike other consoles you will not be able to play previous games. For example the PlayStation 2 could play PlayStation 1 games but the Xbox 720 will not be able to play the Xbox 360 games on that new console. Also, apparently the games will be based on your Gamertag so you will not be able to buy or sell pre used games which is a strange development in my opinion. The pricing is rumored to be around $200-300.

Playstation 4

The PS4 is meant to have 4GB’s of RAM which is low compared to the Xbox 720. The GPU will be the 7970 which is the fastest graphics card this year. The main reason why PS3 does not have party chat was because PS3 did not have enough RAM and therefore could not handle that sort of idea. That may or may not be solved in this console so you might be able to look forward to a party chat on Playstation 4 but it is not confirmed.

The release date is set for early 2014 which is later than the Xbox which gives them a disadvantage but hopefully they will be able to push forward that release date.  The price for the Playstation is rumored to be $400-500 which apparently will still be selling this console as a loss by Sony.

The PlayStation will apparently deal with 4k resolution which is a somewhat big difference by nearly double than the previous. It will also not be using pre owned games the same as the Xbox which is still strange. I am not sure if they are going to be using just a digital modal or if they will still be selling disks that need to be associated with your PSN when you use it. Again it will not be able to play PlayStation 3 games on the PlayStation 4.

However like I said there is still not much information (especially not on the Play Station 4) as there is still a year to come before launch dates. I hope you liked the information you found out in this article and like I said, massive props to Woodys Gamertag who gave all the information. If you have any comments or ideas please let me know.

  1. Really cool details, Roach, thank you. I was never a console person (mainly cause I didn’t have the money to pay for them and then realized I should play less and not buy such stuff), but there’s a lot to be learned about them nonetheless.

    • I have always sort of liked PC gaming more because it seems cheaper for me too and also easier as I am always at my computer. However I am a big gamer and therefore I do a lot of research and stay up to date on consoles too.

  2. Thanks for the info Roach. I actually didn’t know there’s a PS4 coming out in the near future. I’ve heard things about the 720, but, as you said, some are true some are just rumors.

As Dojo, I’m not a console person although the Kinect made me feel like a kid again 😉 I’m still not sure if I should get one. I still prefer to stick to my PC for games.

    • Glad the information was useful to you 🙂 The Kinect was fun but kind of ended up like the Wii for me where I had good intentions to use it but never really did.

  3. Thanks for this, it cleared up a lot of stuff for me. Basically the xbox 720 will have more space but less quality graphics as the PS4 and vice-ver-sa

    • Yeah pretty much. The Xbox will yet again sell before the PS4 which I do not like really, I would love to see more even competition and a launch at the same time. Thanks for the comment.

  4. I don’t think the new Microsoft console will be called Xbox 720, it wouldn’t make any sense… I think they will do like Nintendo and rename it(Gameboy->DS) or maybe still call it Xbox, but not Xbox 720(again, like Nintendo did with the Wii U)
